About the Department
The English Department was started with the inception of the college in 1994. The Department started the Under Graduate degree programme in English Language and Literature with C.A. in 2003 owing to popular demand. Then the programme was converted into B.A. English Literature in the year 2012. The Post Graduate programme, M. A. English Literature, was started in the year 2006. With the view to enhance and enrich the quality of research in literature, M. Phil programme (FT/ PT) was introduced in the year 2013 onwards. Ph.D in English (PT) was introduced in the year 2018. It is in progress from 2018 onwards.
The Department enjoys the special status of being the only department that has contact with every student at the undergraduate level. It aims to strengthen the students’ insights into their own experience and to develop their ability to express their ideas orally and in writing in English.
Under the autonomous status, with its own Board of Studies, the Department has been periodically revising and updating the syllabi for B.A and M.A, including socially relevant and job-oriented subjects and papers which have gained vogue in academic circles.
Digital Language Lab
A state-of-the-art Digital Language Laboratory functions in the Department of English. This lab, installed in March 2011, caters to the language needs of the students at various levels. The software used in the lab aims to equip the LSRW skills in the students. It is available for 60 users at a time. The modules are based on the students’ individual requirements like:
- Remedial English
- LSRW Skills
- Conversation
- Group Discussion
- Interview Skills
- Pronunciation Skills
The students attend the lab once in a week. Each student has full autonomy and freedom to select her challenge level and type of activity. The Department is incessantly working for the improvement and enhancement of existing English language learning facilities.
